This morning I went to a protest in LA.
A “Die-In.”
I’d heard about it through a post online and decided to head down to city hall with my camera.
The idea was simple: everyone lay down on the ground, mimicking a crash scene, to demand better infrastructure and protection for cyclists and pedestrians. It was quiet and a little eerie. People held signs. Some wore ghost bike shirts. Others just lay there, eyes closed. I tiptoed around the edges and took photos.
Afterwards, the group got up, dusted themselves off, and took off on a ride through the city.
I didn’t join.
I didn’t even know there was going to be a ride. And I hadn’t brought my bike anyway. I had taken the Metro in.
Still, I’m glad I went.
It was great to see how many people care, and how art can quietly shout.
